You've legally changed your name with a Deed Poll, and updating your driving licence is often one of the next key steps. Having a licence that matches your current legal name and photo is important for identity verification. How do you use your Deed Poll to update your details with the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency)?

The Process:

  1. Get Your Deed Poll: Ensure you have your original, correctly executed Deed Poll document.
  2. Obtain Application Form: You'll need the relevant DVLA form:
    • Form D1: For cars and motorbikes ("Application for a driving licence").
    • Form D2: For lorries and buses. You can usually get these from Post Offices that handle DVLA services or order them online from GOV.UK.
  3. Complete the Form: Fill out the application form using your new name and details. There will be a section to indicate a change of name.
  4. Gather Documents: You need to send:
    • The completed application form (D1 or D2).
    • Your original Deed Poll document (Don't send copies!).
    • Your current photocard driving licence (and paper counterpart if you have the older style).
    • Possibly other original identity documents to support the change (check current DVLA guidance – sometimes required if other details change too).
    • A new passport-style photograph if your appearance has changed significantly or your current photo is old.
  5. Send Securely: Mail all documents to the DVLA address specified on the form. Using recorded or special delivery is highly recommended as you are sending original identity documents.

Important Notes:

  • Free Update: There is usually no fee to update your name on your driving licence.
  • Return of Documents: The DVLA will return your Deed Poll and other identity documents, though potentially separately from your new licence.
  • V5C Log Book: Don't forget you also need to update the name and address on your vehicle's V5C registration certificate (log book) separately.

Using your Deed Poll to update your driving licence is a standard process. Ensure you have the original document, complete the correct form, and send everything securely to the DVLA.
